Gas ignition believed to be behind Queensland mine explosion that left five critically injured
A gas ignition is believed to be responsible for an explosion that left five Queensland miners critically injured yesterday.
Four mine workers are fighting for life and a fifth is in a serious condition after the workplace explosion in Moranbah, Queensland.
The workers, who all have extensive burns, were flown to Brisbane overnight in a complex medical evacuation involving five planes.
Emergency services were called to Anglo American's Grosvenor Mine on Goonyella Road just after 3pm.
"There was literally hundreds working underground yesterday - It could potentially have caused catastrophic loss of life and damage to that mine," CFMEU Mining and Energy Queensland President, Stephen Smyth told Today.
"I hate to use the words but they dodged a bullet."
Doug Buchanan from the Queensland Ambulance Service said teams of nurses and doctors worked on the men as they were flown from the Moranbah Hospital to Brisbane.
Four of the men "required urgent specialist care for their repatriation", he said. Those men were critical, with the fifth victim in serious condition.
"There were medical services on scene. On arrival our crews worked with those medical services to get those patients to the Moranbah Hospital," a QAS spokeswoman said.
"Our officers have got the five patients in serious conditions all with significant burns."
Aeromedical services were expected to arrive in Moranbah to transport the patients about 6pm.
"All of the injured people's families have been contacted," an Anglo American spokesperson said yesterday.
All remaining on site personnel have been accounted for. The mine has been evacuated and operations stopped.
Mines Minister Dr Anthony Lineman said he expects an independent investigation by the mining regulator.
"This is the fifth mine accident in the last 12 months," Mr Smyth said.
"Obviously we want to get to the bottom of why it happened and look at the contributing factors to ensure that accidents don't happen like this in our mining industry.
"It is totally unacceptable and avoidable."
